New Brock

AUTHOR: Melissa Myers

Description

For years, twelve-year-old New Brock’s family has been teetering on the edge, moving from one residential motel to another, trying to make ends meet. When a death in the family cuts off their emergency financial support, the bottom drops out of their world. Even when they move across the country to make a fresh start, trouble chases them. New’s mama stays out late drinking, leaving New to care for his younger sibling as his older sister runs wild. He tries his best to hang on to his family, but when he has to write a detention journal as punishment for fighting, he has to decide: Does he make a new life with his foster family or hold tight to the hope that one day his mama will return for them?

Excerpt

“Detention—Day 1 Mr. Adams says I have to stay after school every day for three weeks because I punched Jeffrey Whinger so hard he cried. Even worse, I have to write this journal about everything that led up to me freaking out on Jeffrey. And I can’t just say he had it coming, which he did. If Mama knew about this assignment she’d get that tight, scared look on her face and we’d be packed up and gone by tomorrow. The thing is, Mama isn’t around, so we can’t take off this time. And since my sisters and I have already been split up and passed out like playing cards, I don’t think it matters anymore if I tell the truth.”
